Hello Fred!!! What`s up? Can you tell me, how are you and your band? Did you listen name of my zine or something about somewhere before hehe?
Hi! Here is Chris, vocalist of the band! Yes, everything is allright again. David, our guitarist, has quit the band a month ago, after being 16 years in it but we find a new one, who’s name is Damien, and we work hard to prepare all the new gigs that arrives and also we will work again as soon as possible on our new album, the 5th.
About your zine, I don’t know it but I think that Fred does, eh eh.
What zine sent your last interview? How many letters, interviews you get in one week? Are you still connect with underground like in last year? Didn`t underground bore you yet? For what you love this zone?
Last interviews were for TRUECHAOS (Canada) and ECCLIPSE (France). About letters, we have less since internet rules the world, eh eh but we have about 20/30 mails per day, and we made about 97 interview since LIFE is out. Of course, the interviews are mainly just after that we put something new out. About the underground, of course we’re still in it, and we won’t go out of it. It is the most interesting scene for us. Except NAPALM DEATH and BRUTAL TRUTH, and a few rare others, we don’t listen really to big bands in extrem metal. The best bands are in the underground.
We love the undergorund because you still can find integrity and you can meet a lot of honnest and passionnate people. And the music stays really brutal in the underground eh eh eh!
Ok, first of all, I want to ask about your new album (probably will be?)? Do You already know the name? Can we expect any innowations? Will you release that in your GRIND YOUR SOUL?
Yes, we already know the title. It will be the fifth part of our heptalogy about life and abolition of time and will illustrate the moment of wisdom in a human’s life, after the first cd about before birth (“Internal life”), birth itself for “Ex-pulsion”, growing and learning with “Growth” and maturity with “Life”. The title will be “The fifth season”, but don’t know when it will be out, but you can check our myspace page, because we w’ill put very soon 2 tracks which will figure on this new album. The 2 tracks will be “The glance” and “Art, sex and intelligence”. And we already now also the other titles of our future cds : the 6th one will be about death, and will be called “Expulsed” and the 7th and last will be about afterlife (with all its senses) and will be titled “Eternal life”.
About the music, I don’t think that we will change... Our only goal is still to play fast and brutal, and even faster and even brutal eh eh. So, we’ll see what kind of riffs will bring us Damien, but don’t worry, we don’t wanna play slower!
The names of your albums have interesting titles about parts of life of human? New album will be continue your concept? You are very original band in grind style because of this topics... Probably would you like to new bands write lyrics about ambitious topics? What of them (topics) you like the most?
Sorry, I think I already answered a part of this question just before. About these topics, I don’t know if I’d like to see other bands do it or not... It was just our idea. But if some other guys find this cool, we’ll still be glad to ear that, of course!
But about the lyrics, they are not always about the concept, because the concept of life has just to do with the covers and Cd title. But, as our lyrics treat about life in general, so most of the time you can think they are close to the subject.
The topics I like the most is perhaps wisdom, but all interest me. What is hapening before and after life is one of the most important question in human life, and in life itself, every step is important...hard to decide, finally, eh eh.
. INHUMATE have a very energetic and great concerts. For me concerts are essence of music, INHUMATE probably, very like gigs, I am right hehe? Especially your vocalist hehe? Has he any special perfomed microphone to crash his head hehe? How often he damage this equipment hehe?
Yes, you are right ! for us, like for almost all musicians on earth, the best moment about music is when you play it live. This is the moment where everything becomes real and justified. For the moment, Damien hasn’t knew this kind of sensation, but he will very soon eh eh! But for Fred, Yannick and I, I can tell you that the stage is a very important moment! It is the moment where you can unleash the beast that we all have very deep in us and then you can become completly crazy! About the microphone, I must say that I smash a microphone on every gig, but it is not always completly broken, very often it is just the metallic part wich is damaged, eh eh. But it happens sometimes that it is completly out of order...
Is he masochist or is he completely normal hehe? Is his behaviour motive people to mosh? Frenchmen are energetic or static in INHUMATE gigs?
Eh eh no I’m not masochist. It is just the beast that you can see. I think that i’m rather a normal guy eh eh. About people, I don’t really know what they think... some think that I’m completly crazy, some others find it fun, some others do the same... everyone has another reaction, when he faces an image of the beast eh eh!
About our gigs infrance, we mus say that people are really sick very often! French guys are really good in this and we like it, when we are close to riot eh eh! SICKNESS IS THE LAW!!!
Do you like go to concerts as a audience? Have you in Stasbourg any grind gigs? How often you play in your family town?
Yes of course ! As soon as we can, even if i twas not always easy. Because of our jobs we had to rehearsal only on Saturday evenings, so we missed unfortunatly lots of gigs, but if we had no rehearsal, or when it was another day, we tried to go there as soon as possible. Fortunatly, most recently, we can also rehearse during other days in the week, so we hope that we will be able to see even more gigs eh eh. We have a few gigs and/or festival in Strasbourg, not so much but it is better that nothing. Beside our own festival, (the Soul Grinding Festival the last edition will happen the 24th february 2007), we have/had the skullfucked festival and a few association that make some good bands playing.
About playing in our hometown, I’ll say we play once or two times per year, not more. All the other gigs are located in other towns or country.
What do you think about people which are going to concerts to get drunk and they aren`t remember nothing from gig? Are they true metal/grind fans?
Eh eh, I don’t know. I’ve got a few friends that do this kind of thing, but I don’t drink, so I never missed any band because of alcohol. But I really think taht it is a pity to drink to much and remember nothing after, or even not see the band... It is something that I don’t understand and don’t like, but everybody can do what he wants eh eh... but for me, they are less fans of metal than fan of alcohol, and I find metal much better ...
You are well-known band in Europe and probably often you are going to any gigs to various countries. Can you tell me whether sometimes you must pay to costs, because organisator is without due salary? What is the most distance palc, where you played? How are you travelled? Only by bus?
Yeah, it happened a few times that we lost money on some gigs but it isn’t often, as we don’t ask much. Just money for gas, something to eat and drink, and a place where we can sleep. It was more when we made our first gigs. Gig the farest, it was when we played in Poland for the moment. We always travel with our own cars and to go and come back from strasbourg to there is about 2000 km. But some people proposed us to play on other continents, like Brazil, Canada, Japan, Australia, USA, Malaysia or Thailand. For the moment we couln’t because it costs to much for the travel but I’m sure that one day we’ll do a trip like this one eh eh!
You played in my country in 2004 in Wroclaw and Poznan, how you remember this gigs? Are you remember polish supporting bands? What do you think about polish maniax? Which polish bands you know (not only metal/grind!)? Know you ICH TROJE, BLUE CAFE, BUDKA SUFLERA hehe?
Yeah, of course we remember this gigs! The first one in Wroclaw was really great, with a really cool audience! It was hell very quickly in the place! The second one, in Poznan, seemed to be cool also, but we had a lot of technical problems and we had to stop after 6 or 7 songs, unfortunately. But the trip to your country was really great and I hope that we’ll play there once again eh eh!
The support bands were DEFORMED, RZEZNIA, BUNKER NEKROMUNDA & PIGNATION. I really loved DEFORMED, and they are really nice guys! We salute them, by the way!
About Polish bands, we know SQUASH BOWELS, VADER, DEAD INFECTION, DAMNABLE, CICATRIX, EPITOME (who will play in our SOUL GRINDING FESTIVAL in a few days, wich is also an excellent band!). I saw them on the OBSCENE EXTREME FESTIVAL last year and it was really powerfull. And I discovered there also another band, who gave me its demo, wich is KAK MADAM, that I really like a lot! Polish scene is a great scene, eh eh!
All people in grind know that you released your cd`s yourself by your GRIND YOUR SOUL. Did you once think about release in other label? Maybe this could help your band in various matters? You know, promotion, salary to records in good studio. Did you have any propositions to release your stuff? Can you say which labels that offered?
Yes, for the moment we’ll do everything through our own label GRIND YOUR SOUL, and I don’t think that we’ll work with another label, because we don’t feel it like this. About the studio, the one where we record, the DownTown studio, is a professionnal studio, so a label won’t bring us better conditions, and for promotion, when I see all the work made by Fred for this, I don’t think that a label could make the half of that! So, we have no use to stop being self-produced, this is how INHUMATE works and it fits us well. And about salary, I don’t think that any label can offer a real salary for grind musiciens, except perhaps for NAPALM DEATH and such bands.
Once in past you said, that you have in INHUMATE songs about love, probably that isn`t typical thing in this type of music hehe? Did any "true gore shit" grinders reproach you that INHUMATE is "open-minded"? Are you imagine, that all grind bands could play love music (SQUASH BOWELS - "Love Songs" hehe, I listen this now!) hehe? Of course I think, that is not a bad thing, that`s interesting, but I think, that grindcore/death metal should "tell" brutal histories from our life (I haven`t in mind gore/porno stupid stories)...
Well, I don’t know for you, but I sure that everybody has already knew a love story taht ended, and I think that it can be one of the most hard thing to live! I understand that most people want to read brutal lyrics, but first, I don’t think that my lyrics are “true blue”, but they have almost always a humanist idea behind, or a reflection about life... at least I hope so eh eh! For me, grind core is the echo of life, the fight, the struggle of life for going on existing, so the lyrics are about life and not always about death, but life is brutal and violent. Death is stilness and silence, don’t you think?
Also you say, that INHUMATE is anti-religious band. So, have you in your life something to put your faith? Are you believe in something? Is on the world any religion, which dogmats are near to your opinions?
First of all, we are not an anti-religon, but a no-religion band! Eh eh! In fact, about what we believe, I think that each of us has his own opinion. For me, Christophe, I’ll say that the religion that I’m the most close of could be boudhism. I’m vegetarian and don’t like the idea of violence between human without consenment, but I don’t believe in reincarnation. In fact, I consider me as an agnostic, wich is to say that I think that no human can know if there is a life after death or not, so I just don’t know. Everything can be possible, but I don’t like dogmas, like you have in the monotheists religions. I think that this is bullshit, an interpretation of infinity made by the very small mind of humans. Noone can embrace infinity. It isn’t possible, for my opinion... Eh eh!
But, beside of that, I think that the main ideas of Jesus Christ are very clever, even if I don’t believe in this faith. For me, humanism is just an evidence for me.
What do you think about black metal music and his "true" fans? Are you listening this style of music? Did you play with any bands? For me music a few bands is good, but standart image is very funny. This corpse-paints, face looks, thorns hehe... Did you see any videos of IMMORTAL hehe?
No, I don’t know very well this scene, but we have a few friends that are listening to black metal, but they try to have a new approach of this music, with I think is better. They like the corpse-paints and such things, but are more into pagan view, and not just the stupid satanism and/or NSBM, wich is real bullshit. I just hate this kind of guys.
But Yannick and Fred are big fans of VENOM, and David, our ancient guitarist was too. And we all like a lot BATHORY also, wich are black metal bands, but not like the new way the other bands like immortal or whatever play it. I don’t really like the voices, too high for me, and I dislike the sound also. Too far and too cold. But, sometimes I can listen to, once per year, I’ll say.
Ok, next question. Recently in the one of polish webforums about death/grind music, people talked about suicides (by the way death of member of PULMONARY FIBROSIS). Part of talkers said that they aren`t respect person, who commit the suicide. They said among others, that he was coward. For me this is stupid attitude, he for sure had a big problem and he can`t cope with something. It`s dependent of status of human psychic. What do you think about suicide problem?
Eh eh... You can read for example an old lyric from us : DESPERATE, wich is about suicide. I agree with you. It is easy to tell someone is a coward. You don’t know what he went through and what he lived before. I don’t think suicide is a solution, but I’m sure that people who commit suicide, just don’t see any other way to stop suffering. It is their last solution. It is a pity, of course, but we must respect their choice. And I find you must be so fucking desperate to end your life like this that we cannot understand really what they suffered.
Surely you heard about killing in Canada commit by young man in school. He listened metal musiC. Once in past in USA any squirt, fan of SLIPKNOT killed his friends in school after the play on computer in brutal games like Quake. What do you think, wirtual world and music have big influence to young people?
No, of course not... If yes, every metal fan or gore movies freak, should kill everybody. But they can be a revelator on the other side, so society must be careful when one guy is too much about this things. Music or cinema is just art, and art won’t manipulate people, but it can reveal someone who doesn’t feel well in his life. And perhaps is it the same guy who will commit suicide in an other period of his life! People should not mix causes and consequences!
Are watching TV, news? It seems to me that media don`t bring to problem of misery in the world up. They talks about terrorism, politics, war, killings, but TV avoid problems of hunger in Africa, sicknesses, inhuman situation in China... Probably Europe is very closed to general world problems... What do you think about this?
In fact, I think that TV gives what people wnat to see, so if you want that TV changes everything, you must change people, and this means you must educate them differently. The capitalist system is a good system, if it isn’t pushed too far, but the philosophy of the capitalism is “always more”, so one day or another, you go too far with it. And I think it is what is happening know(especially with the environement problems). And now, all the big firms try to make new cars that polute less, but scientists are warning them from more thant 30 years. But it is only know that they start to change because we reach the limits.
So, if you want to change the world, you must be careful of what you buy, because giving money to someone, a firm or whataver, is also giving him or it a part of power, because money is power. So if you give your money to someone that will use it well after, you made a good choice. And a bad choice when it is the other case, but we all do this one day or another. We must just be careful that we don’t do it to often eh eh!
France is very expensive country, one of the most. Is difficult to find the work? Where you work?
Yeah, it is an expensive country, but it is one of the country where you are the most free in the world, so I won’t change! Eh eh! Yes, it is difficult to find some work, but you must deal with it. I’m working in a call-center to make opposition against credit card when you lost it or when it is stolen. Fred is a french-teacher, Yannick is a bus/tram driver and Damien is still student, making his doctorat, and so do I. He is in chemistry and I in french litterature.
Were you in the most of popular places in France like a Notre-damme temple, Disneyland (hehe), Eiffel Tower? What can you recommend me to see in your country?
France is a very beautifull country, and there is too much things to see! I think that France is the most visited country in the world! So I went once in notre-dame, yes, and I saw the Eiffel tower also, but as we don’t live in Paris, wich is 500 km from our home town, we cannot go as often as we want to. But Strasbourg is also a very beauctiful town. And, if you go to France, you should visit le Louvre, of course, and a lot of other places like le Trocadero, les Champs Elysées, for Paris, and a lot of beautiful other towns... The castel from la Loire,, etc, etc, etc... Too numerous to mention all eh eh!
How is your attitude to football? Isn`t strange for you, that 90% of French team is niggers and imigrants hehe? Do you like your football star - Zidane?
No one of us is a real fan of football, even if I like to watch important matches. And no it isn’t strange to me that the French team is almost only with immigrants and black people (I don’t like the term of nigger), because football is a popular game, and players come all from the people, the lower class, for the main part, so, of course, you find the same people playing on the highest level. And I think that it is a good thing to see that my country is still a land of freedom, even if we must be careful of how to manage all this...
Surely you didn`t hear, that one of leaders polish death/grind crushers- PARRICIDE, Zajac (vocalist) worked in local radio and he served a metal/grind music. After switch tracks of INHUMATE album "Growth", they threw out him from radio hahaha....It was sweet hehe... Your comment?
